The comprehensive hardscape project at Lora Batchelor Middle School for the Monroe County Community School Corporation replaced asphalt and concrete pavements, including the reconfiguration of vehicle (automobile and bus) and pedestrian traffic routes.
The project design involved the undercutting and rebuilding of select areas of deteriorated pavements; milling and reconstruction of asphalt paving based on traffic and drainage requirements; installation of curbing to control storm water runoff; removal and replacement of deteriorated concrete pedestrian pavements and stairs. A thorough pre-design survey process identified a mix of reconstruction items that maximized the impact of a limited budget. Challenges included working with the local municipality to rework driveway drainage that extended into the adjacent roadway.
